Who We Are
Sign Me Out is an independent website about degoogling, which means moving off Google’s products one at a time, in an order that keeps your data and your accounts safe. We write for people who are tired of Google for any reason, whether that’s privacy, Gemini turning up in every app, ads, or the worry of losing an account your whole life depends on.
You don’t have to leave everything. Plenty of people keep a Google service or two, and that’s fine. Our job is to make each next step clear, so you know what to switch to, how long it takes, and what will break.
Sign Me Out is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google LLC. “Google” and the names of Google’s products are trademarks of Google LLC. We use them only to describe what you’re moving away from, and we don’t use Google’s logos.
How We Pick Tools
Each category gets one default pick, then a few alternatives with a plain “choose this if” for each. We judge every tool on the same six things.
- Privacy. What can the company see? We favor end-to-end encryption where it matters, such as email, files and photos, and services that collect as little as possible.
- Jurisdiction. Where the company is based and whose laws apply to your data. We say so on every comparison.
- Open source. Code that anyone can inspect, and software you can host yourself if you want to.
- Ease. Could someone who isn’t technical set it up in an evening? A private tool nobody can use helps nobody.
- Price. The free tier, and what the paid plan really costs. Prices carry the month we checked them.
- Data export. Can you leave this tool as easily as you’re leaving Google? We prefer standard formats and working export buttons.
We also tell you when Google is still the better product. Google Maps has better live traffic, and nothing matches YouTube’s catalogue. You should know that before you switch.
How We Test and Date Pages
We test what we recommend, and we date every page. At the top of each page you’ll see when it was last updated and what we checked, for example “Prices and features checked October 2026”. Google renames menus and moves settings often, and providers change their prices, so we re-check pages and update the date when we do.
How We Handle Money
- No ads. We don’t sell space on our pages.
- No trackers. No advertising scripts, no tracking pixels, no data brokers.
- No affiliate links, currently. Nobody pays us when you sign up for a tool we recommend.
- No paid placement. No company pays to appear on a page or to rank higher.
If we ever add affiliate links, three rules apply. Each one will be labelled right next to the link, not tucked away in a footer. They will never decide which tool we pick or how we rank alternatives. And they will never appear inside the scan tool’s results.
Some of our default picks are free, open-source projects with nothing to sell, and we’ll keep recommending tools like that whenever they’re the best choice.
Privacy on This Site
This site sets no cookies and runs no analytics. We don’t build a profile of you, and we don’t want to. If you run a site and want visitor stats without cookies, our Google Analytics alternatives page compares the options.
The scan tool runs entirely in your browser. When you load your password export, a Takeout file or your pasted “Sign in with Google” list, it is read on your own device and never uploaded. Once the page has loaded, the tool works offline, so you can turn off Wi-Fi and use it. It never asks you to connect or sign in to your Google account.
Google’s password export is a plain-text file with all your passwords in it, so delete it once you’ve imported them into your new password manager.
Corrections
If something on this site is wrong or out of date, please tell us. Email hello@signmeout.me with the page and what you found. We fix errors, and we note the date of the change on the page so you can see what was corrected and when.
Suggestions for tools we should look at next are welcome too.
