How We Choose

Every product below gets one default pick. It’s the option most people can switch to and keep using. The other picks cover different needs, like stronger privacy, a lower price or running it yourself. Our full comparison pages explain each choice and show you how to move your data.

We look at four things.

  • Daily use. A private app you give up after a week doesn’t help you. The default pick has to be easy enough for anyone.
  • What happens to your data. We favor end-to-end encryption, a clear business model and companies that collect as little as possible.
  • Getting in and out. We check for import tools that accept a Google Takeout export, and for open formats so you can leave again later.
  • Clear prices. We check prices on each provider’s own site and date them. Plans change, so check again before you pay.

No company pays to appear here, and this page has no affiliate links.

What the Badges Mean

  • European. The company is based in Europe, including Switzerland, Norway and the UK.
  • Open source. The code of the apps is public.
  • End-to-end encrypted. The provider can’t read your content.
  • No AI. We found no generative AI features in the product when we last checked.
  • Free plan. You can use it for free, with limits.
  • Self-hostable. You can run it on your own server.

A few guides sit outside the product list below. If you run a website or an app, see our reCAPTCHA alternatives and Google Cloud alternatives. For trips, our Google Flights alternatives cover fare searches and price alerts. For a straight verdict between two options, read our head-to-head comparisons.

You don’t have to replace everything. Start with the service that bothers you most, or scan your Google footprint to see what you still use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to Google?

No single company replaces all of Google, and you don’t need one. A common setup is Brave Search for search, Proton for email, calendar and storage, Bitwarden for passwords and Signal for messages. Switch one product at a time.

Are there Google alternatives without AI?

Yes. Tick the No AI filter to see tools without generative AI features. DuckDuckGo runs a version of its search without AI answers at noai.duckduckgo.com, and the Vivaldi browser has no built-in AI. These features change often, so we recheck the badge each time we update a page.

What are the best European alternatives to Google?

Proton (Switzerland) covers email, calendar, storage and documents. Tuta, mailbox.org and Posteo (Germany) cover email. Filen (Germany) gives you 10 GiB of free cloud storage, and Vivaldi (Norway) is a browser. Tick the European filter to see them all.

Do I have to replace every Google product?

No. Partial is fine. Many people keep YouTube for its catalogue or Google Maps for live traffic. Start with the services that hold the most personal data, such as email, photos and passwords.
